Dulani
Pallekondage of Army Sports Club has been appointed to lead the Sri Lanka
women’s rugby team ahead of the Asian Women’s Rugby Sevens tournament to be
held in Dubai on 19 and 20 November.
Dulani
was number one choice to lead the team after the other experienced player
Anusha Aththanayake sustained an injury, and though in the touring squad is
doubtful to make the tour. She is scheduled to face a fitness test on Monday,
and based on the report, she will be replaced by Under-18 player Kumari
Hekashani, who was named in the standby list.
Anusha
led the team for the Olympic qualifier in China in 2019, and her participation
is vital for Sri Lanka in this tournament.
Dilani
Polhewage from Navy Sports Club is the only debutant in the squad, while all
the others are experienced players who have represented the Sri Lanka women’s
team.
Three
young players Nipuni Rasanjali, Umayangana Thathsarani and Anusha Thushari
Samaraweera will be representing Sri Lanka for the second time in the Asia
sevens this year.
