Left wing Gayan Perera stood out with a hat-trick
as Kandy SC warmed up for the Super Round by outgunning Army SC 62-17 in their
Maliban Inter-Club Rugby League first-round fixture in Panagoda yesterday (24).
The defending champions playing expansive rugby
toyed with the poor defence of the home team to run up 10 tries of which five
were converted, apart from a penalty try, while the soldiers could only reply
with three tries with one being converted.
The game proved to be yet another mismatch of epic
proportions in the ongoing League Tournament, as the men from Nittawela put
down a marker ahead of the crucial second round commencing shortly.
For Kandy, who led 29-5 at half-time, right wing
Kavindu Perera, inside centre Diluksha Dange, hooker Kenula Hettiarachchi,
Player of the Match and veteran fly-half Srinath Sooriyabandara, replacement
scrum-half Aruna Perera, and substitute forward Udara Dias scored a try each to
go along with Gayan Perera’s hat-trick and the 50th minute penalty try.
The goal-kicking duties were shared by fullback
Hirusha Sampath and substitute halfback Aruna Perera for the visitors, who
hardly broke sweat in putting the struggling home side to the sword in a
one-sided encounter.
For Army SC, who are destined to compete in the
Plate segment, prop Buddhi Sreemantha, replacement forward Chamara Jayawickrama
and hooker Nalin Kumara dotted down, respectively, while fullback Gaurava
Pannila added the extras to one of the tries.
